The Montana Trombone Chorale was formed in 1989 when several trombonists in Missoula, Montana came together for the purpose of playing and enjoying music literature written or arranged for trombones. Shortly thereafter the group began performing for the public. The chorale members are also performers in regional symphonies and wind ensembles.
The Montana Trombone Chorale has twice toured Europe, including performances in the Salzburg Mozarteum, Vienna’s Grosser Musikvereinssaal, the great Ulm Cathedral, and Augsburg’s historic St. Anna Cathedral. The Chorale performed with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Boys Choir, and the Vienna Men’s Singing Society. The Montana Trombone Chorale has performed for musical festivals such as the Salzburg-Vienna World Choral Festival, the Mosel Festwochen in Germany, and the St. Timothy Summer Music Festival in Montana. The ensemble has contributed liturgical music for cathedral masses and church services both in North America and Europe. The repertoire of The Montana Trombone Chorale spans seven centuries and includes the early music of Palestrina and Gabrielli, the later music of Bach, Haydn, and Bruckner, and compositions by twentieth century composers. American spirituals, folk songs, jazz, Latin music, marches, and swing tunes most often round out a concert. The repertoire requires a range of instruments beyond the common tenor trombone. Members also play double trigger bass trombones, and the alto trombone. As a good will gesture, The Montana Trombone Chorale performs free of charge for its international performances.
